Fire doors should be inspected at least once a year to ensure they remain compliant and effective. In buildings over 11 metres in height, communal fire doors and riser cupboard doors should be inspected every three months as part of a scheduled maintenance plan.
Fire doors should have 2-4mm gaps around the edges between the door leaf and frame, and 3mm or less at the bottom for smoke containment compliance.
A standard FD30 fire door (30 minutes) is typically 44mm thick, while an FD60 fire door (60 minutes) is 54mm thick, in line with UK fire safety standards.
A compliant fire door must meet British Standards and be installed in line with BS 8214:2016. It should also be properly maintained and fitted with the correct certified components.
